Thank you Skaran for such a detailed reply. I had meant to reply to this many times but time just kept moving. I did get all this working. In particular, I got to the bottom of the red lightning bolt problem. If the dispatcher is running on unix then it seems it is necessary to enter a password into the console preferences so that console can ssh in to the computer. This is under console prefenences->remote control->unix services control.
