Throughout all the versions of Muster I have administered, renderclient always broadcasts traffic over TCP 7685 every 5 seconds. In the past, with 26 render nodes, this hasn’t been an issue, rather an annoyance. Now, with 86 render nodes, this broadcast traffic is causing issues with some of our Linux servers since we’ve gone from 26 render nodes to 86. Now our security department wants the traffic controlled or turned off. I see there is a way in the rc.conf to change the time between each connection_resolution; but is there an alternate to broadcast_presence that would allow me to direct my traffic to a dedicated manager?

The broadcast presence function is required by the DISCOVERY function in the management console. If you’ve configured and discovered your hosts, there’s no need to keep it active.

By the way, it’s an UDP broadcast packet, so , there’s no way to route it elsewhere than your local network.

How would I go about disabling this traffic? Is it done in the client preferences? And will doing so cause any negative effects to functionality of the render farm?

Yes, uncheck the “broadcast presence” flag. It won’t change anything in the functionalities.
