10th October 2007 at 10:21 am #14214hi leo,
one very important feature that we would like to see is the possibility to have time rules for the slaves that incorporate the number of used processors.
in our company we have access to a huge amount of computers that are used by regular computer users (word, excel, mail, web…). these machines all have dualCore CPUs.
so during daytime we want to use 1 processor of these machines and both processors during night time.that would be very nice to have
cheers

21st October 2007 at 7:03 pm #14745Maybe giving the option to limit the number of working instances…..why not..
8th November 2007 at 5:31 pm #14746This option would be huge for us. We currently have a huge number of machines that could be used with this feature. We want to upgrade all our workstations to quad core and use 3 during the day, and 4 at night. This would grow our renderfarm by 30%! please please add this feature!
22nd November 2007 at 1:54 am #14753that’s definitively doable, we already scheduled it as medium priority so you can expect the feature in the near future.
Cannot understand what thorlyn means with “having controls over how many processors it uses”. That’s already doable in the client preferences, if you want it on a job directly, it’s doable through a custom param in the job template even it discourage me. Having this feature on a job basis really give a lack of control…
23rd November 2007 at 9:26 am #14758yes,
on a per job basis or with the global setting in the render client is already possible but not the intended behaviour.
the way described above (and i think you got that one right leo) is wanted: a dynamic possibility to change that behaviour.
even one more: being able in muster explorer to assign the amount of CPUs used by right clicking on the client would be desireable and great.
cheers

27th November 2007 at 12:55 am #14759I can set how many threads a render uses in Maya’s render globals. As far as I know, I can’t set how many each node is limited to independently. I have 28 machines that require light usage most of the day. They are all quad core. By setting this group of machines to use only 3 processors each, that keeps the machine responsive for the user but gives me an additional 84 processors to render with. I have a mixed farm of quad core and 8 (octo?) core machines. By limiting the processor usage in the Maya globals I would loose almost as many processors as I gain. Too many people use the farm to trust that the appropriate settings would be used with groups of the farm. Someone forgets, all the processors get used on everyones machines, things get crazy slow, and everyone gets pissed at me.
If I could configure a processor limit per node would be wonderful. Being able to use the slave time tables to limit processors by time, (so those nodes are fully utilized on the weekend or late at night) would be more than wonderful!
I hope that was a bit more clear than my last post. Thanks for your response.
