We have a Dell PE 1950 xp64, dp xeon5160 box that I am trying to load the Muster504 onto as the server and client gui/ and services. We get the install as far as starting services and it continually fails with “error 1920 service muster dispatcher service 5 (muster_dispatcher) failed to start. Please verify sufficient privileges” it then uninstalls and resets. I am logged on as domain admin and Muster is a domain user which has local admin privilages. The install fails. We have set up v5 on a regular xp Pro (32bit) with no problems to see if there is something wrong with the program or our machines. Any thoughts about xp64?

The problem should not be with XP64 itself but in your domain configuration. The default user creation tool in the installer assumes everything is standard configured and may fail under certain circumstances. I suggest you to “SKIP” the user setup during the installer, it should complete without errors. Later setup the Service user manually following the guidelines on the online manual.

Leonardo thanks for the suggestion however it still does not seem to work.

I cleared the registry of all vvertex and Muster settings. then attempted to install Muster5.04.x32.win but it failed. This is what I did:

a.I opened all the ports on my local machines firewall that muster needs

    1. accepted the license terms
    2. selected “server/client/client GUI/and command line tools
    3. selected “install as system services”
    4. accepted default ports: 7680,7681,7683,7690,7691
    5. left registration info blank…it showed a detected host id ending in “fbdd” (possibly v4 on our network)
    6. accepted the default render client config with 127.0.0.1/7680/7681/7683
    7. selected “skip user setup”
    8. selected “skip” in the scan for active engines..as I do not have max or maya currently installed on this system..
    9. install seems to work nice until it gets to starting services then it hangs with a error1920 ..muster dispatcher failed to start.
    10. hit cancel, yes, and install rolls back..

event viewer shows: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Muster Dispatcher Service 5 service to connect.

and: The Muster Render Client Service 5 service was successfully sent a stop control. The Muster Render Client Service 5 service entered the stopped state.

    the muster renderclient log showed:

I look forward to your help.

If the installer is not able to start the service, the problem isn’t in the network port but in the user account created by Muster to assign to the services themself. Just “SKIP” the user account creation section during the installation procedure, and assign a user to the services manually as explained in the manual.

    This should solve your issue.

    Regards.

    Leonardo,
It’s working now on xp64. BUT it is still confusing. I used our backburner service user logon for the account permissions and it worked fine instead of the muster user.

Muster5 would not load when I tried it while logged on as the domain admin. My tech installed it while logged in, he is only a domain user, with local admin permissions. Somehow it worked for him. Why would the install only work when logged in as a domain user vs, as a domain admin who also has local admin permissions?

I have found another disturbing thing in that the uninstall is only available via windows control panel while logged in under my tech’s logon. WHY is this. As a domain admin I expect to be able to uninstall ALL programs ever loaded onto a computer no matter what user installed them, with the control panel add/remove. Can you adjust the install so that this is possible in the future

Back to the install problem, I think that it may have been a permissions thing or in the way that Muster tries to create the user and password. Is there anywhere we can find what the muster user password is? I was not able to find it. I could imagine that you would like to keep it private however I would think that all domain admins should know it. Is it somewhere in an ini or dat file within muster? This would allow the adjustment of the Muster service when needed.

Thank you for the updates, we look forward to production.

This is weird, apart from the issue in the Installer to create the user account (we’re looking into making that phase of the installer a little more configurable), the things you’re reporting doesn’t have much sense but I’m almost sure that there’s some kind of policy on your domain that causes those strange authorization errors.

Apart from that, as I said, we are going to change the user creation and things should be easier in the near future, regarding the Muster account, the password is simply “Muster”. Off-course, you should change it on the hosts for increased security.

    Regards.

Thank you for the information. Its a grerat product and I look forward to any updates.

A while back there seemed to be a problem with strip assembly. We usually make images 10k x 8x . Are there any know limitations or problems we should be aware of prior to using muster504?

    Thanks

Version 5.04 has some problems assembling and generating image slices with a slice number different than 4. We fixed the problem as well as fixing some issues with the Mental Ray for Maya image slicing problems. The fixes have been included in version 5.1.

    Regards.
